Why is having a skincare routine important to you? “Following a skincare routine is the easiest way for me to maintain healthy looking skin while also actively protecting against potential issues such hyperpigmentation and skin cancers that can arise from daily sun exposure.” 

What are your skincare goals? “Overall, my goals are fairly low-maintenance. My biggest issue of concern is that I am prone to a mild form of hyperpigmentation called melasma on my cheeks and forehead, which can become more prominent in the spring and summer months. Therefore, my priority is making sure that I follow a strict regimen of sun protection on a daily basis.” 


Dr. Charles’s daily Routine:

"my skincare regimen is fairly simple...

1. In the morning, I wash with CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser. I have fairly sensitive skin so I use almost all CeraVe products because they are gentle and fragrance free.

2. I will then apply a generous layer of EltaMD UV Clear that doubles as both my sun protection and moisturizer. It contains zinc oxide, which acts as a physical block sunscreen, however it is lightweight and not visible on the skin after application. In the dry, cold winter months I will supplement this with a layer of CeraVe Moisturizing Cream as well.

3. I always use a fragrance-free soap for the body such as Dove or Aveeno, and make sure to apply a generous amount of moisturizer from head to toe promptly after bathing. 

4. At bedtime, I wash with CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser to remove the grime and dirt from the day. I will then moisturize with CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion PM.

5. I also use a gentle prescription retinoid cream on top of the moisturizer approximately twice per week to help manage hyperpigmentation. I usually will go with tretinoin 0.025% cream. This assists with cell turnover and aids in collagen production, which in turn helps keep skin healthy." 

What other healthy habits are part of your routine? “I try to workout at least three times per week. I generally will do a mix of running and weight training. I find that you can't underestimate the benefits of exercise for skin health. Regular aerobic exercise appears to prevent and even reverse some of the signs of skin aging. [Over time], the outermost layer of the skin gradually becomes thicker while the deeper layer, known as the dermis, thins. This in part contributes to textural changes and wrinkles. Studies have demonstrated that regular exercise helps to prevent these changes.

Also, exercise helps to maintain healthy levels of certain stress related hormones, such as cortisol. High levels of this hormone can increase sebum production, which can lead to more acne breakouts. Lastly, regular exercise can improve mood overall, which cannot be overlooked when trying to look your best!"
